1 · What you need

No drivers, no account, no internet connection. PatchVault works fully offline.

2 · One-time setup: Generic Control OFF

PatchVault can always send sounds to your M-solo. To also hear your panel — so your own sounds can be captured — one setting on the instrument must be right: Generic Control must be OFF. Many units ship with it ON, so do this once before your first capture. It stays set afterwards.

  1. Press SYSTEM/RECORD — this opens the System Configuration.
  2. Press PERCUSSION [THIRD] — this selects the Generic Control setting.
  3. Press the lowest white key — this sets the value to 0 = OFF.
  4. Press SYSTEM/RECORD again to save.

PatchVault watches for this: if it hears no controls after you connect, it tells you on screen — that message almost always means Generic Control is still ON.

3 · Connecting your M-solo

  1. Connect the USB cable to the M-solo and the PC, and switch the M-solo on.
  2. Start PatchVault. It looks for your instrument automatically; on Windows it usually appears as USBMidi2-ACX.
  3. If needed, pick the device in the Input and Output fields at the top and press Connect. The header shows the connection state; the Devices button refreshes the list.

Once connected, the on-screen panel mirrors your instrument live: move a drawbar on the M-solo and it moves on screen.

4 · The MIDI channel, briefly

Think of it like a radio channel: your M-solo listens on one MIDI channel, and PatchVault must send on the same one. From the factory the M-solo listens on channel 1, and PatchVault's MIDI Ch field is set to 1 to match — our testing on real hardware ran exactly like this.

Rule of thumb: if you never changed the channel on your instrument, never touch this setting. Only players who set their M-solo to a different channel in its own menu need to enter the same number here.

5 · Capturing your first preset

Why “listening” matters: recalling a built-in patch on the M-solo only sends a short “patch number” signal — it does not describe the sound. So PatchVault captures sounds the honest way: it listens while you work the panel in MANUAL mode.

  1. Put the M-solo in its live MANUAL state and play the panel: choose the instrument type, pull the drawbars, set Leslie speed, percussion, vibrato, effects.
  2. Watch the mirror: every control you touch lights up on screen, and the app ticks off what it has heard.
  3. Type a name in the Preset name field and press Save as preset (or New capture to store the current panel state right away).

Your preset appears as a tile in the library — type, drawbars, Leslie, everything included. The expression pedal is never stored: its position is your playing, not a setting.

6 · Recalling a preset

Tap any tile in the library. The complete sound jumps back to your M-solo: instrument type, drawbar setting, Leslie, percussion, vibrato and effects — the panel LEDs on the instrument follow. Change everything on the panel, tap again, and your sound is back, exactly as saved.

7 · The live panel mirror

The left half of the window is your instrument's panel, mirrored: the six instrument types (B-3, Vx, Farf, Ace, Ens, Syn), the nine drawbars, Leslie OFF/STOP/SLOW/FAST, Vibrato/Chorus, Percussion, Octave, the Synth waveform and the effects. It works both ways — switch a type or the Leslie from the app and the instrument's panel lamp obeys; work the hardware and the screen follows.

8 · Setlists

Open the Setlists tab to line your presets up in playing order — for a gig, a service, a session. On stage you then move through your sounds one tap at a time, in the order you planned, with nothing to search for and nothing to remember.

9 · Patch Magic

Patch Magic invents new sounds for the Ensemble and Synth types: a guarded random combination that stays inside musical limits — no broken or unusable results. Press it, listen, and either keep the discovery as your own preset or roll again. Happy accidents, kept.

10 · The factory library & finding sounds

PatchVault ships with 60 factory presets, researched from classic registrations for all six instrument types. Use the filter chips (All, B-3, VX, FARF, ACE, ENS, SYN, Favorites, Own, Factory) or the search field to find a sound by name or tag. Factory presets never count against the trial — and your own presets live right next to them.

11 · Import, export & backup

Use Export library to save your library, Import to bring presets or a library back in. Your library file also lives in the app's data folder — exporting a .pvlibrary now and then is the simplest backup there is.

13 · Troubleshooting

The app connects, but hears nothing when I work the panel

Almost always Generic Control is still ON. Redo the four steps in section 2 — carefully, including the final SYSTEM/RECORD press that saves.

Sending a preset does nothing on the instrument

Check the MIDI Ch field: PatchVault must send on the channel your M-solo listens to (factory: 1 — see section 4). Also check the Output device at the top.

My M-solo doesn't appear in the device list

Re-seat the USB cable, switch the instrument off and on, then press Devices to refresh. Try a different USB port; the instrument usually shows as USBMidi2-ACX.

A recalled preset sounds different from what I saved

Make sure you captured in MANUAL mode while working the panel (section 5) — a sound can only be stored as completely as it was heard. The expression pedal is deliberately never part of a preset.
